Breathing Space is an AutAid initiative designed to provide practical relief and support for family carers of children and adults with severe autism and additional needs.

We understand that caring can be rewarding, but it can also be physically and emotionally demanding. Sometimes a family carer does not need a week away. Sometimes they simply need a few hours to rest, attend an appointment, spend time with family, catch up on sleep or simply recharge.

Breathing Space aims to create a trusted network of trained carers who can provide short periods of respite and support when families need it most. Depending on individual circumstances, a Breathing Space carer may visit your home or arrange to meet in another mutually convenient location.

The service is being developed to support family carers before they reach exhaustion or breaking point, helping them take some much-needed time for themselves while knowing their loved one is being supported in a safe, understanding and caring environment.

There is currently no direct cost for using the Breathing Space service. However, if families are in a position to make a donation towards the initiative, it will help us support more carers and expand the service to reach more families in need.
